Getting started with Push Notifications

Overview Copied

Opsview Monitor and Opsview Cloud Mobile support Push Notifications to receive alerts about your network devices. This article explains how to use and configure Push Notifications within Opsview.

The following diagram explains the process of sending messages from your Opsview Cloud server to your Opsview Cloud Mobile device. The workflow is split into two parts: Registration and Delivery.

Prerequisites Copied

Registration Copied

  1. Your device requests a token from Apple or Google’s servers.
  2. Apple or Google’s servers return a unique token to your device.
  3. Your unique token is registered with Opsview Push servers.

Delivery Copied

  1. When your Opsview Cloud server generates an alert, it passes it onto the Opsview push servers.
  2. The Opsview Push servers look up the device token and send the alert to Apple or Google’s servers.
  3. Apple or Google’s servers then push the notification to your device.

Getting started Copied

Now that you understand the basics of how push notifications interact with Opsview Cloud and Opsview Cloud Mobile, let’s get you set up to start using them.

Registration Copied

To get started, enable push notifications on your device.

  1. Sign in to your Opsview Account. For more information, see Opsview Username.

  2. Enter your local Opsview Cloud system installation details and log in.

    Log in credentials

  3. After logging in, you can access the Settings page on Android by swiping open the drawer, and on iOS by tapping the Settings icon in the bottom navigation bar.

    Settings option

  4. In the Settings page, click Notifications then enable the Notifications button.

When you activate push notifications, the app requests a token from the cloud of your mobile device’s platform (which is Google or Apple). This token is a unique identifier for your mobile device that allows the cloud service to transmit the push message to your device. Opsview Cloud Mobile uses the following providers for push notifications:

    • Google Cloud Messaging (GCM) for Opsview Cloud Mobile Android.
    • Apple Push Notification Service (APNS) for Opsview Cloud Mobile iOS.

      Access Notifications screen

  5. Once push notifications have been enabled successfully, you can check to see if your device can receive push notifications. Simply click the Send Test Notification button and you will receive a confirmation push message.

Success means your Opsview Cloud Mobile device is now registered and ready to be used for push notifications.

Delivery Copied

Once you have registered your Opsview Cloud Mobile device for push notifications, you next need to set up push notifications and notification methods on your Opsview Cloud system. For example, you can configure the push notifications to be received when the hard disk on your server runs out of space.

To set this up, you need to follow these steps:

  1. Set up a notification method for either Android or iOS in order for your Opsview Cloud server to be able to send notifications.
  2. Set up a Notification Profile to configure when to send an alert to your device.

Note

You will need to log in to the app as the same user you have added the notification for; otherwise, you will not receive notifications.

You will now start receiving alerts on Opsview Cloud Mobile.

Although the delivery of push notifications involves several components and steps, a push notification will typically appear on your device within moments after being triggered by Opsview Cloud. However, because unexpected things can always happen, we strongly advise you to always use at least two different notification methods for your critical systems.
