SQL-Toolkit - Troubleshooting SQL Toolkit Password Authentication

When attempting to migrate or update a Geneos SQL Toolkit setup, you cannot locate the plain-text password for the database user in the Geneos configuration files. From the user interface, the sampler may show a connection error, and log files will indicate an authentication failure (Login failed for user, ORA-01017, etc.) because the encrypted string cannot be decrypted or reused across different machine environments.

Possible cause(s) Copied

• Root Cause 1: The password is intentionally encrypted by the Gateway for security, and Geneos does not provide a mechanism to decrypt it.
• Root Cause 2: Encrypted strings are tied to the machine’s specific environment keys. Copying this string to a new server will result in failed authentication.
• Root Cause 3: The password on the target database was changed, but the Geneos configuration was not updated to reflect the change.

Possible solution(s) Copied

• Solution Root Cause 1: You cannot decrypt the password. You must obtain the original password from your security team or the database administrator.
• Solution Root Cause 2: Do not copy the encrypted string to a new server. You must enter the plain-text password into the Geneos configuration editor on the new server, which will then generate a new encrypted string based on the local environment keys.
• Solution Root Cause 3: Reset the password directly on the target database, and then update the password field in the Geneos Gateway Setup Editor.
