Storage

The Storage panel provides a detailed breakdown of the shared datastores and local storage. You can view details of the datastores in your Baseline View, and how these datastores are used by the hosts and VMs.

Shared and local storage can be identified by the following icons:

Datastore demand Copied

Each bar chart represents an individual storage component and its utilisation against capacity. The utilisation is shown with a colour indicator to allow easy identification of the datastores which, for example, are approaching capacity. The plotted part of the bar chart indicates the reserve headroom which by default is 20%.

The black indicator on the bar is a representation of how much of that storage component is used by the servers that are currently visible in the sunburst. For example, if you zoom a host in the sunburst, the storage panel filters to show only datastores and other storage components that the host has access to. The black bar indicates the aggregate storage resource demand from the machines that are running on that host. In a shared cluster, this is normally a subset of the overall storage utilisation.

The columns contain the following data:

View datastore details Copied

To view the details, follow the steps:

  1. In the Storage panel, select the required datastore.
  2. Click Options image and then select Show details.
    The Datastore details panel opens.

Storage utilisation Copied

The Datastore details dialog window provides more information about the datastore configuration and usage. The available information helps you better understand how each datastore is configured and how it is being used.

Available information includes the following:

When a datastore is close to capacity, you can see which VMs would be affected if this datastore becomes full.

The displayed chart shows you the current demand against the provisioned and actual capacity of the datastore. The chart helps you identify trends and potential datastore overcommitments.

To view the details of the physical server or Workloads, follow these steps:

  1. Select the item for which you want to see more details. It can be a host, a VM or a specific file.
  2. Click Options image .
  3. Click Host details or VM details or Show time series chart.

Add capacity Copied

When creating a Forward Thinking scenario model, you can see how adding capacity impacts your storage utilisation.

To add capacity to the datastore, follow these steps:

  1. In the Storage panel, select the required datastore.
  2. Click Options image and then select Add capacity.
  3. From the drop down menu, select the appropriate option depending on whether you want to increase capacity by a certain percentage, or if whether you want to increase capacity in megabytes (MB), gigabytes (GB) or terabytes (TB).
  4. Select an option to repeat this operation if required.
  5. Click Add capacity.

An operation is added to the timeline of your scenario.

Add datastore Copied

In Forward Thinking, you can add a datastore in order to resolve potential storage issues in a scenario.

To add a datastore, follow these steps:

  1. Right-click a segment in the sunburst to which you want to add a datastore. All hosts from this point in the hierarchy will have access to this datastore.
  2. From the menu, select Add datastore.
  3. Provide the details of your datastore and click Add.

A new datastore now appears on the list in the Storage panel.
